James Sorensen

ImageJames David Sorensen, 61, passed away on Saturday May 30th, 2026, in his garden, doing what he loved.

James was born on April 27, 1965, in St. Paul and was adopted by Russ and Gail Sorensen. He grew up in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, as the middle child among his sisters, Carrie and Renate. Later in life, he was grateful to connect with his birth mother, Diane; his birth father, Lamore; brother, Darin; and sister, Jessica. He graduated from University of Minnesota Twin Cities with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management. James then went on to work for the Parks and Recreation Department for the city of Circle Pines. He was a certified arborist and loved to plant trees.

James was married to Dana Castonguay and together they shared a blended family of Maranne Hull, Garrett Sorensen, Aaron Hull, and Evan (Tienne) Hull, and their son Elias. James was thrilled to be a Papa and he relished every moment with Elias. Jim and Dana were building a small hobby farm In Nowthen, MN together and getting ready to enjoy retirement in a year and live out the best years of their lives planting flowers, loving their grandchildren and traveling.

James was most often found working on various projects around his home. Such as his beloved garden, his greenhouse, and his chicken coop. He adored the outdoors and spent a great deal of time walking in nature, boating, and growing his vast knowledge of plants and wildlife. One of his greatest passions in life was the pursuit of knowledge. His mind was a library of information, and he walked through life as a teacher to his loved ones.

James will be remembered for his never-ending ability and desire to help others. His kindness was limitless. To know him was to know a genuine heart, a passionate spirit, and a quiet strength. Above all, to know him was a gift.

He lives on in the hearts and spirit of those he loved, among the roots of his cherished garden, the footsteps of wildlife, and within the beams of sunlight. James will be carried with us always.

Memorial service will be held at 12 PM on Monday, June 8, 2026, with visitation an hour prior at Kozlak Radulovich Maple Grove Chapel. Service will be live-streamed. James Sorensen Service
