Sleepy Eye fire victim dies from injuries

A 29-year-old Sleepy Eye woman has died as the result of injuries she suffered in a house fire May 8 in Sleepy Eye.

On Tuesday the Hennepin County Medical Examiners office reported Katie Rehbein’s death to the Sleepy Eye Police Department. Rehbein had been at Hennepin County Medical Center, where she was treated for extensive burns and smoke inhalation.

Her 3-year-old son also was hospitalized at HCMC. His condition is not available, police said.

The other occupants — Mindi Rehbein, 56, an 11-year-old boy, 8-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy — were treated at Sleepy Eye Medical Center and have been released, police said.

Emergency personnel responded to a fire call at 7:01 a.m. May 8. They arrived to find two people helping the occupants get out of the burning house. Officers then learned Katie Rehbein was still inside. Firefighters entered the house and removed her.

Authorities have determined the fire was an accident; however, investigators are working to determine the source of the fire.
