Pictured l to r \u2013 front: Wyatt Feucht (1st place Individual), Oliver Trebesch, Ethan Feucht, Carson Sellner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sleepy Eye FFA members competed in their first Region VI Contests on October 3 and 10, 2024.\u00a0 The Dairy Team and Soils Teams placed 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0in their contest! The Poultry and Horse Teams both took 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0and the Forestry Team received 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Dairy Contest, Rachel Portner, Jared Portner, Dustin Portner, Lucia Martinez Paredes, Charlie Hoffmann, Isaac Christensen evaluated several classes of Holstein dairy cows and heifers on October 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0in Pipestone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also answered questions on one class of cows and recited reasons on the other class of cows. They judged a pedigree class where they judged cows based on their records and a sire selection class where they chose the best bull for their cow as well. The final portion of the contest is a team activity with dairy trivia and management questions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dairy team placed 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0out of 7 teams and Rachel Portner was the highest scorer in the contest and earned 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0place individual.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On October 10<sup>th<\/sup>, FFA members competed in four other Career Development Events (CDE\u2019S) at Sherburn in the Region VI Fall CDE competition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the soils contest, members judge different soil profiles, and identify soil characteristics, including texture, depths, and erosion potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The soils team placed 1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0in the competition out of 13 teams. Team members included:\u00a0Wyatt Feucht (1<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall), Oliver Trebesch (2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall), Ethan Feucht, and Carson Sellner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The poultry team was the 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0Place team out of 14 schools.\u00a0 The team consisted of\u00a0Mateo Hornsby (1st place Individual), Kayden Klein (7th place Ind.), Carsten Nienhaus, Ava Sellner, and Makayla Strong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Poultry CDE involves judging chicken and turkey carcasses, eggs, processed poultry, chicken parts identification, and taking a poultry knowledge test.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The horse team took also took 2<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0place in the competition out of 13 teams. Team members included:\u00a0Leah Kucera\u00a0(3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall), Millie Lax (4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall),\u00a0Kenedi Wersal\u00a0(5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall), Paola Gonzalez, and Breanna Lopez.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the Horse CDE, members judge halter classes, performance classes (western pleasure, hunt seat, English pleasure, western riding, western horsemanship, and trail), and also identify breeds, colors, markings, and tack.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0The forestry team placed 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the Region VI Contest out of 6 teams.\u00a0The team members included:\u00a0Daniel Armstrong\u00a0(6<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall),\u00a0Clark Lazatin\u00a0(12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place Individual Overall), Kaylie Fulmer, and Ella Arkins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the forestry contest, members identify trees, wood, and tools used in the forestry industry; measure trees; take a forestry exam; solve business management problems; and use a compass and pacing to figure out the bearing and distance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of the teams also\u00a0advanced to State Competition which will be held in the Twin Cities in April.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Sleepy Eye FFA members competed in their first Region VI Contests on October 3 and 10, 2024.\u00a0 The Dairy Team and Soils Teams placed 1st\u00a0in their contest!
