PTION: Five Sleepy Eye FFA members competed in the Region VI Leadership Development Competition in Okabena on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Pictured l to r \u2013 Kendall Haala, Camryn Maher, Alex Confer, Lucia Martinez Paredes, and Karina Martinez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On Wednesday, November 12th, the regional competition was held in Okabena for all FFA Leadership Development Events (LDE\u2019s).<\/p>\n

Kendall Haala competed in the FFA Creed Competition. She placed 5th\u00a0out of twelve contestants.\u00a0 In this contest, members are judged\u00a0for their ability to present the five paragraphs of the National FFA Creed from memory and answer questions related to it.<\/p>\n

Lucia Martinez Paredes earned 2nd\u00a0place in the Employment Skills competition out of four contestants and advanced to State Competition. This LDE simulates real-world activities used by employers and tests students\u2019 ability to perform effectively throughout the employment process. Students submit a cover letter and resume, complete an application, and participate in face\u2013to\u2013face interviews.\u00a0They complete the process by writing a follow-up thank-you letter.<\/p>\n

Camryn Maher competed in the Prepared Public Speaking Competition and placed 3rd\u00a0out of seven\u00a0participants, advancing to State in December.\u00a0Student contestants write and deliver a six to eight minute speech related to agriculture. Speakers are judged on content and composition, delivery of the speech, and their ability to answer questions from the judges.<\/p>\n

Alex Confer was a contestant in the Farm Bureau Discussion Meet Competition.\u00a0The Discussion Meet is an activity designed to build basic discussion skills while developing an understanding of important agricultural issues and exploring how groups can pool knowledge to reach a consensus and solve problems. The four fundamental bases of general discussion are constructive criticism, cooperation, communication, and problem solving.<\/p>\n

Karina Martinez competed in the Spanish Creed and placed 2nd\u00a0in the contest, advancing to state. This contest operates similarly to the Creed Competition, where students present the five paragraphs of the National FFA Creed from memory, but the students present and answer questions in Spanish.<\/p>\n
