Caregiver burnout symptoms can include:<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0depression<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0anxiety, irritability, or anger<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0feelings of exhaustion<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0self-criticism<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0withdrawal from usual activities<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0trouble with handling caregiving responsibilities<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0substance abuse<\/p>\n<p>If you have caregiver burnout, check out Adult Day Care Services.\u00a0 Adult Day<br \/>\nCare Services respite is two-fold.\u00a0 It gives the caregivers much needed time<br \/>\nto themselves and gives their loved ones social and interactive therapy with<br \/>\ntheir peers.<\/p>\n<p>Many adult day care services offer such things as:<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Social activities; music, movies, crafts, excursions<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Meals<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Fellowship support<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Assistance with daily living<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Nursing care<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Help with activities of daily living<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Medications<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Physical therapy<br \/>\n*\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Transportation<\/p>\n<p>Finding an Adult Day Care Services provider takes a little investigating on<br \/>\nyour part.\u00a0 It is important to know what you are getting and that your loved<br \/>\none is comfortable with his or her new surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>First: Ask for recommendations.\u00a0 Check with your local Senior Center, Area<br \/>\nAgency on Aging Services, Mental Health Centers, Doctor, Clinic, Family,<br \/>\nFriends and neighbors.\u00a0 The best recommendation is by someone who has used<br \/>\nthe adult day care services or is familiar with those who run it.<\/p>\n<p>Second: Call and ask the facility to send you information.\u00a0 Ask specifically<br \/>\nto be sent the application, eligibility requirements and payment<br \/>\ninformation.\u00a0 Ask to see the calendar of activities, menus, hours and days<br \/>\nof operation are needed to be sure to fit your schedule.\u00a0 Ask about<br \/>\navailability of transportation to and from the location and what its cost.<br \/>\nAsk who runs the facility.\u00a0 Is it private, non-profit or a franchise or part<br \/>\nof an assisted living facility or a nursing home?<\/p>\n<p>Third: Visit the Adult Day Care Services facility and the provider along<br \/>\nwith the person you are caring for.\u00a0 See if the staff is friendly.\u00a0 Check<br \/>\nthat the facility is clean and odor free.\u00a0 Ask about the experience of the<br \/>\nstaff.\u00a0 Request a list of references.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth: Find out the cost and payment requirements.\u00a0 Fees for Adult Day Care<br \/>\nServices providers vary from one facility to the next.\u00a0 Many facilities<br \/>\nprovide services with a sliding fee scale.<\/p>\n<p>One last word of advice: Don&#8217;t feel guilty about taking your loved one to<br \/>\nadult day care.\u00a0 Caregiving is a stressful, challenging job and you want to<br \/>\nmake sure that as a caregiver you have the necessary respite to allow you to<br \/>\ndo a good job of providing care for your loved one.<\/p>\n<p>Watch for more Family Living Focus information from Gail Gilman, Family Life<br \/>\nConsultant, M.Ed., C.F.C.S. and Professor Emeritus &#8211; University of Minnesota<br \/>\nin next week&#8217;s paper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gail Gilman, Family Life Consultant, M.Ed., C.F.C.S. and Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota If you are a primary caregiver for a loved one, you are well aware of the daily stress and emotional and physical impact it can have on your health.
