{"id":146953,"date":"2026-07-28T17:28:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T22:28:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sleepyeyeonline.com\/goodnews\/?p=146953"},"modified":"2026-07-28T17:28:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T22:28:27","slug":"family-living-focus-resting-may-boost-your-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sleepyeyeonline.com\/goodnews\/family-living-focus-resting-may-boost-your-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Family Living Focus: Resting May Boost Your Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Gail Gilman, Family Life Consultant, M.Ed., C.F.C.S. and Professor<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Emeritus, University of Minnesota<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Your memories may grow stronger when you take a break to rest.\u00a0 This could<br \/>\nhave important implications for how students study, how people can best<br \/>\nlearn new things, and how we remember things.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term storage of a memory is called memory consolidation.\u00a0 It is thought<br \/>\nto involve interactions between different brain regions.\u00a0 There is a belief<br \/>\nthat the brain &#8220;replays&#8221; memories, reactivating the same activity patterns<br \/>\nas during the experience itself.\u00a0 Several studies suggest that this happens<br \/>\nduring sleep.\u00a0 Researchers investigated whether it can also happen when you<br \/>\nare awake.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers scanned the brains of sixteen people during two different tasks<br \/>\nas well as before, during, and after rest periods.\u00a0 The people were shown<br \/>\npaired sets of images that included a human face and either an object, such<br \/>\nas a beach ball, or a scene, such as a beach.\u00a0 They were not told their<br \/>\nmemory would be tested.\u00a0 They were just told to rest and think about<br \/>\nanything they wanted, as long as they stayed awake.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, correlations between the brain regions were low during the<br \/>\ninitial period of rest and high when the people were shown the pairings.<\/p>\n<p>The memory for object-face pairs was much better than for scene-face pairs.<br \/>\nActivity between two areas of the brain correlated significantly during the<br \/>\nrest period after the people saw the object-face pairs.\u00a0 This did not happen<br \/>\nafter people saw the scene-face pairs.\u00a0 The higher the correlation between<br \/>\nthe brain regions during the later rest period, the better the person<br \/>\nremembered the pairing.<\/p>\n<p>These results suggest that these brain regions coordinate to replay recent<br \/>\nexperiences during periods of rest in order to consolidate memories.\u00a0 Taking<br \/>\na coffee break after class, work or other activity can actually help you<br \/>\nretain that information you just learned.\u00a0 Your brain is working for you<br \/>\nwhen you&#8217;re resting.<\/p>\n<p>Look for more Family Living Focus information from Gail Gilman, Family Life<br \/>\nConsultant, M.Ed., C.F.C.S., and Professor Emeritus &#8211; University of<br \/>\nMinnesota, in next week&#8217;s paper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gail Gilman, Family Life Consultant, M.Ed., C.F.C.S. and Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota Your memories may grow stronger when you take a break to rest.\u00a0 This could have important implications for how students study, how people can best learn new things, and how we remember things.
