St. Mary’s 72, Mayer Luthera 57

Mayer Lutheran scored the first six points of Thursday’s Class A quarterfinal game. Then Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s junior guard Morgan Mathiowetz took over.

Mathiowetz scored the first 10 St. Mary’s points and 18 of the first 20 to give the second-seeded Knights a lead they didn’t relinquish en route to a 72-57 victory in the Minnesota State High School League’s 2026 Girls Basketball State Tournament on March 12 at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion.

Mathiowetz had 28 points by halftime, hitting 5 of 8 three-point attempts as St. Mary’s built a 43-33 advantage. She finished with 41 on 14-for-25 shooting and also had eight rebounds and six steals.

After a fourth-place finish last season, St. Mary’s will attempt to take the next step in a semifinal game Friday at 2 p.m. against either Kelliher/Northome or Central Minnesota Christian at Williams Arena.

Mayer Lutheran got 18 points from Hallie Hunter and 13 from Isabella Keaveny. Next up for the Crusaders is a consolation semifinal at noon Friday at Concordia University’s Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul.
